Shopify Fees in 2026: What You Really Pay Per Month and Per Sale
Every Shopify fee in one place: the monthly plan, the card rate on each sale, third-party gateway and currency fees, apps, and the October 2026 price rise, with worked examples for a $100 sale and for stores selling $5,000 and $20,000 a month.

Shopify fees come in two layers: a monthly plan fee (from $5 for Starter to $2,300 or more for Plus) and a fee on every sale. If you use Shopify Payments in the US, the per-sale fee is 2.9% + 30¢ for an online card payment on Basic, falling to 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. If you use another payment provider, Shopify also adds its own 0.2% to 2% on top of what that provider charges.
So on a $100 online sale on the Basic plan, Shopify keeps about $3.20 and you keep $96.80. That is before apps, a paid theme, currency conversion, or the plan itself. Below you'll find every fee in one place, what changed in October 2026, and worked examples for stores selling $5,000 and $20,000 a month. All figures are US prices, checked on October 20, 2026.
Shopify plan prices per month (as of October 2026)
The monthly fee depends on the plan and on whether you pay monthly or yearly. The numbers are less tidy than they should be. When we checked Shopify's pricing page on October 20, 2026 (US view), it showed lower Basic and Grow prices than most fee guides and reports. Here are both:
| Plan | Shopify's pricing page (Oct 20, 2026) | Widely reported US price | Third-party gateway fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | not listed | $5/month | not listed |
| Basic | $27/month, or $19/month paid yearly | $39/month, or $29/month paid yearly | 2% |
| Grow | $72/month, or $54/month paid yearly | $105/month, or $79/month paid yearly | 1% |
| Advanced | $399/month, or $299/month paid yearly | $399/month, or $299/month paid yearly | 0.6% |
| Plus | from $2,300/month | from $2,300/month (3-year term) | 0.2% |
The "widely reported" column comes from guides updated in 2026 by DemandSage, commerce-ui and First Pier. Shopify sets some plan prices by country, and the price you pay is the one in your admin under Settings > Plan, so check there before you budget. New stores also get an introductory offer: when we checked, it was 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months on most plans.
Paying yearly saves money on every plan except Starter and Plus. On Basic, it's $96 to $120 a year depending on which price you're shown.
The October 2026 Shopify price increase
On October 16, 2026, Benzinga reported a JPMorgan analyst note saying Shopify had raised US prices for the Grow plan by 13% ($10) and the Advanced plan by 20% ($60), observed on October 15. Common Thread Co. gives the monthly prices as Grow $95 to $105 and Advanced $339 to $399, with Plus unchanged, and says the new prices apply right away to new subscribers and from the next billing date for existing merchants.
Two things to keep in mind:
- Basic was not part of the reported change. The rise affects Grow and Advanced.
- Sources disagree on the before and after figures. Some guides already listed Grow at $105 and Advanced at $399 before mid-October. We couldn't find an official Shopify announcement. If you're on Grow or Advanced, compare your next invoice with your last one.
Shopify transaction fees: what you pay per sale
This is the part that grows with your store. What you pay per sale depends on your plan and on how the customer pays.
Shopify Payments card rates (US)
| Plan | Online card rate | In-person card rate (POS) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.6% + 10¢ |
| Grow | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 10¢ |
| Advanced | 2.5% + 30¢ | 2.4% + 10¢ |
| Plus | from about 2.15% + 30¢ (negotiable) | negotiable |
Rates as listed by commerce-ui and First Pier. Shopify's own pricing page only says card fees vary by plan, and its help center says rates vary by plan and market.
The third-party gateway fee
If you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That comes on top of whatever the provider charges you. If Shopify Payments is your only processor, this fee doesn't apply. There's one more catch in Shopify's help center. If you run Shopify Payments alongside a third-party provider, Shop Pay and local payment methods are charged at standard Shopify Payments rates plus a 1.25% premium.
Currency conversion
If a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify charges a conversion fee. Its fees page puts this at 1.5% for US stores (2% in other Shopify Payments countries), on top of the card rate.
The Starter plan
Starter ($5 a month) gives you a link-in-bio style shop rather than a full online store. Shopify's Starter page doesn't publish the rate. Instead, it points you to the plan page for your region. In a Shopify community thread, a support reply gave it as 5% + 30¢ per transaction with Shopify Payments. Cheap per month, expensive per sale.
How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
| Situation | Shopify's cut | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Basic, online card, Shopify Payments | $3.20 | $96.80 |
| Grow, online card, Shopify Payments | $3.00 | $97.00 |
| Advanced, online card, Shopify Payments | $2.80 | $97.20 |
| Basic, in person (POS) | $2.70 | $97.30 |
| Basic, customer pays in a foreign currency | $4.70 (card rate + 1.5%) | $95.30 |
| Basic, third-party provider charging 2.9% + 30¢ | $3.20 to the provider + $2.00 to Shopify | $94.80 |
| Starter (reported 5% + 30¢) | $5.30 | $94.70 |
So the honest answer to "what percentage does Shopify take?" is roughly 2.5% to 3.2% of a typical online sale on Shopify Payments. It can reach around 5% if you use another provider on Basic, sell across currencies, or sit on Starter. Small orders hurt more because of the fixed 30¢: on a $10 order, 2.9% + 30¢ is 5.9%.
Shopify fees per month: two worked examples
Here are two stores with a $50 average order, selling online through Shopify Payments. The plan fee is shown at both prices from the table above.
A store selling $5,000 a month (100 orders)
| Basic | Grow | |
|---|---|---|
| Card fees (rate × sales + 30¢ × orders) | $145 + $30 = $175 | $135 + $30 = $165 |
| Plan (monthly billing) | $27 to $39 | $72 to $105 |
| Total before apps | $202 to $214 | $237 to $270 |
At this size, Basic is clearly the cheaper plan. Shopify's fees come to about 4% of sales.
A store selling $20,000 a month (400 orders)
| Basic | Grow | Advanced | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card fees | $580 + $120 = $700 | $540 + $120 = $660 | $500 + $120 = $620 |
| Plan (monthly billing) | $27 to $39 | $72 to $105 | $399 |
| Total before apps | $727 to $739 | $732 to $765 | $1,019 |
Moving from Basic to Grow saves 0.2% of sales on card fees, which only pays for the higher plan once you sell about $22,500 to $33,000 a month, depending on the plan prices you're shown. On card fees alone, Advanced rarely pays for itself until sales are far higher. People usually choose it for its features and its lower third-party and international rates.
Use your own numbers: (monthly sales × your card rate) + (orders × 30¢) + plan fee + apps. That's your Shopify fees calculator.
The costs that aren't on the pricing page
- Apps. Most stores add apps for reviews, email, subscriptions, upsells or shipping rules, and each one is usually its own monthly subscription. commerce-ui's breakdown puts typical app spend for mid-market brands at $350 to $1,400 a month. A small store will spend far less, but even a handful of $10 to $30 apps adds up.
- Themes. Free themes exist. Paid themes cost about $150 to $400 once, according to the same source.
- POS Pro. POS Lite is free. POS Pro costs $89 per location per month (per Shopify's pricing page) if you need it for a shop or market stall.
- Development help. Custom sections, integrations or fixes that a theme or app can't handle are paid separately to a developer or agency.
For a store doing $20,000 a month with $150 in apps, the realistic total is around $880 to $890 a month, or about 4.4% of sales.
When the fees add up: other ways to run a store
Shopify is a strong choice for many sellers. It's quick to start, well supported, and the fee is fair at low volume. The maths changes when apps pile up, when you need features no app does quite right, or when your store has to fit a specific way of selling (trade accounts, bundles, bookings, custom quotes). We compare the platforms in Shopify alternatives: which platform fits your store.
Another route is a store built for you and run on a flat monthly subscription. With Buildly, a small shop with cart and checkout fits the Growth plan, and a store with customer accounts, stock and shipping fits Business. Both are priced "from" a monthly figure on our pricing page. The subscription covers design, the initial build at no extra charge, hosting, maintenance and a set number of change requests (1 a month on Growth, 2 on Business). There's a setup fee, and you own the source code and database after 12 months (Growth) or 24 months (Business).
Two honest caveats. First, your payment provider still charges its card fees on every sale, as it would on any platform. What disappears is the platform's own cut and the stack of app subscriptions. Second, connecting a payment provider or shipping service is a standard integration at $20 each, paid once. How to cut your Shopify fees
- Pay yearly if you're staying. It's the easiest saving on Basic, Grow and Advanced.
- Use Shopify Payments unless you have a strong reason not to. It avoids the 0.2% to 2% third-party fee.
- Check the plan breakpoint. Upgrade when your sales pass the break-even point, not before.
- Audit your apps every quarter. Cancel the ones you no longer use.
- Watch currency and order size. Small orders and cross-currency sales cost the most per dollar.
- Read your billing page after October 15. If you're on Grow or Advanced, confirm the new price.
